Track of the Day – PIXIES – Crystal Closet Queen

Well this very much goes under the category of things that shouldn’t work but do. Pixies doing a cover of a southern rock and roll Leon Russell track. Southern boogie meets post-punk/indie? Ok, sure… But it’s great. Genuinely great.

You know who Pixies are, I don’t need to give you much info there. This song is from a tribute album to Russell which just came out. It’s an interesting listen although possibly fair to say Pixies are the biggest band on there overall. If this puts you in the mood to listen to their back catalogue then cool, god knows they have enough of one. As well as their classic records from the late 80’s and early 90’s I am a particular fan myself of 2020’s Beneath the Eyrie, but there is also last year’s Doggerel which is very very good too. The band are almost certainly on tour somewhere at the moment too – they almost always are.
