Baby in Vain are a female grunge/stoner rock trio from Denmark who I stumbled across while scouting my usual new music feeds for something good. ‘Wherever I Go’ is their latest single, released earlier this month, and follows their 2017 debut album More Nothing.
This is, I guess, downbeat indie rock music. A little dreamy in parts but fuzzy and sludgy too. There is a nice disaffected vocal, but backed up with some harmonies. Some nice guitar interplay here and there too. Yeah, I like it. There was a time when this particular subgenre of music was pretty much all I listened to so it’s bound to be right up my street. I can hear snatches of The Cure in this, Ride, and the US west coast bands like Best Coast, Bleached, Dum Dum Girls. In other words, it sits alongside some great company.
The band comprise Lola Hammerich, Benedicte Pierleoni and Andrea Thuesen and has already played the Roskilde Festival which I find quite impressive, as well as supporting Ty Segall and Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore. Yeah, the list of company they keep just gets better and better. Keep an eye on these because I’m guessing this is the first new music from a second full length LP. And it promises to be a good one.
