So, this is great. I mean, really great. It’s difficult to overstate how great I think it is. Kate Clover is an LA singer/songwriter that fuses alt rock with a sense of retro style that is so cool it hurts.
This, her second single as far as I can tell after the equally brilliant ‘Channel Zero’ which came out last year, reminds me of so many different things I don’t really know where to start. The closest, I guess, are the early singles of Black Honey which have a deliberately kitschy feel to them. This isn’t kitsch though, it’s one hundred percent classic underground rock music that draws in elements of rockabilly and the wall of sound and Nico (of Velvet Underground fame). It’s short, it’s punchy, it’s timeless sounding. It makes you want to time travel to 1964 and get yourself a pink Cadillac convertible to tour around the strip in at night, flitting between the late night shows and the casinos and budget motels.
Ok, I’m off on a flight of association, but that’s what good music does to me generally. The bottom line is this is a brilliant song. And the world needs more of this.
