Bambara are a three piece post-punk band, originally from Athens, Georgia but now based on New York. They feature twins Reid and Blaze Bateh with William Brookshire on bass. ‘Serafina’ is from their fourth studio album Stray released in February on Wharf Cat Records. (I’m seeing a lot of great stuff on this record label by the way – it has one hell of a roster of artists on it at the moment).
The band have toured with plenty of other post-punk bands, including IDLES, and they definitely come from the same sort of sonic universe I guess. But they’re a little more melodic than most, a bit earthier, a touch darker. There’s some quality Southern gothic storytelling going on in places which is in full evidence on this song. It brings to mind Nick Cave to me, but less his ‘Bad Seeds’ incarnation, more his early days in The Birthday Party.
Anyway, yeah, great song, great band, great album. I haven’t checked out much of their back catalogue yet but I’m off to do that now…
