Well, I got one of my heroes crammed into my selections this week when I managed to sneak a Nick Cave song in, so why not go for another? I’ve been a huge fan of Ray LaMontagne since his first album Trouble came out back in 2004. My god, is it really that long ago? I love his voice, his style, his songwriting – everything really.
That first record reminded me a lot of Astral Weeks era Van Morrison, but LaMontagne has covered a lot of musical ground since then. Through blues, soul, bluegrass, psychedelic rock. Often on a single record. But underpinning it all is that voice and that classic rock sensibility. Yeah, I think he’s a class act. His music isn’t necessarily all that fashionable, which is a crying shame. Thirty or forty years ago he’d be up there with Neil Young in the popularity stakes, I’d bet my life on it.
Anyway, ‘Strong Enough’ is from his forthcoming album Monovision due out on 26th June. It sounds like a return to form to me – a full on slice of classic ’70’s Americana. It brings to mind the best of Creedence Clearwater Revival. Great video too. Keep an eye out for that record, I have a feeling it’s going to be a good one.
