This is the second time I’ve picked a song by Hot Snakes, the veteran punk band signed to Sub Pop records. Back in 2018 I was waxing lyrical about their track ‘Six Wave Hold Down‘ from their last album Jericho Sirens. And in many ways this one is similar in style.
Occasionally quite noisy, actually often quite noisy, the band do have a melodic side. One which harks back to the ’60’s – surf bands and garage bands from that period. ‘Checkmate’ reminds me a little bit of The Sonics in fact. Although, admittedly, The Sonics on amphetamines. It’s heavy and grinding and uncompromising. And pretty great. All the things I like really. I guess this might be the lead single from a new album, so keep an eye out for that over the next month or two. I will be.
