I make no apology for being a huge Lemonheads fan. Evan Dando is one of my all time musical heroes – I think he is such a massively underrated songwriter. One of the first articles I wrote on this blog was a review of the time I finally got to see him live in Wolverhampton just under two years ago.
And ok, this isn’t one of those underrated songs of his, it’s a cover version. His band are gearing up to releasing Varshions 2, their second album of eclectic covers. Would I like to have heard some new original material? Of course I would, but when Dando does a cover he has this knack of making it sound like his own work. So I could hardly care less.
‘Old Man Blank’ is originally by The Bevis Frond, a British indie, folk-rock, alternative band that has been around since the ’80’s (and still going strong). No, I didn’t know much about them either, to my shame, but once again Dando has opened up a new avenue for me to explore, which is another reason why I love him so much.
