Deer Tick have been around for over 10 years now and hail from Rhode Island. Billed essentially as an alt-rock band, they have a distinct alt-country edge to them too, although one with a fair bit of grit to it.
They released two albums simultaneously last year: Deer Tick Vol. 1 and Deer Tick Vol. 2, each showcasing a different side to their sound. The former is predominantly folk-tinged alternative country music – think Neil Young in his quieter moments, think Giant Sand. The latter, from which this track is taken, is louder and rawer and sits in the same bracket as Neil Young with Crazy Horse, or Grant Lee Buffalo, or Buffalo Tom.
Both are great records. Volume 2 is more my kind of thing generally I guess, and ‘It’s a Whale’ is absolutely my kind of thing. It’s the stand out track for me, with the catchiest guitar riff I’ve heard for a while and a totally relentless manic energy. The vocal has a nice sneer to it too, which reminds me of John Lydon and early Liam Gallagher (a bit). It’s great anyway…
