I’ve wanted to include this as a track of the day twice now, but there just wasn’t a shareable version of it available anywhere. Now that they’ve released a video, there is, so third time lucky.
Dan Luke and The Raid are from Bowing Green, Kentucky and boast the mighty Cage the Elephant amongst their fans. (In fact, it seems one of the band is the younger brother of Matt and Brad Shultz from Cage the Elephant, so there’s some musical pedigree there somewhere). ‘Black Cat Heavy Metal’ is their first single, I think, and was released in June this year. It has a brilliant ’60s garage band sound to it, in the vein of The Sonics or Van Morrison’s old band Them. I’ve been listening to it a lot. It doesn’t really sound like anything else out there at the moment.
The band have just been on tour as well, supporting Declan McKenna across the U.S. If I could have gotten this selection out sooner, I could have given you some notice of that, but never mind. I’m sure they’ll be out there again soon enough. On the evidence of this, they’ll probably get themselves out further afield under their own steam quite shortly.
