Yak have been around since 2014 and released their debut album Alas Salvation last year. Today’s track ‘Harbour the Feeling’ is from this album so is about 12 months old but only recently discovered by me. (Interestingly enough, they were a word of mouth recommendation by someone, given to me in the same week as another word of mouth recommendation by a different person for the band Yuck. It’s not that relevant I know, but vaguely interesting as far as coincidences go I guess).
Anyway, I think this is great. It sounds to me as though it’s poised precisely at the midway point between Sonic Youth and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Sludgy guitars, layered dynamics, hypnotically focused lyrics. Right up my street if I’m being honest.
Another slightly pointless fact: apparently Yak’s lead singer Oli Burslem used to sell antique furniture to Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore.
