Gig review: Puppet Rebellion, Little Grim, and Stealing Signs – Birthdays, London – 9th June 2017

I booked the tickets for last night’s show to see Puppet Rebellion as I’ve been following them for a couple of years now. They’re one of my favourite bands and they always put on a great live show. Last night’s gig was a showcase of acts from Scruff of the Neck, with each band playing a 30-minute set.

I’d never heard of the other acts, but listened to some of Little Grim’s music on Spotify before the gig and thought it sounded great.

Stealing Signs

Stealing Signs were the first band on stage last night. I only heard that they were also playing at the gig on the actual day of the gig, so I didn’t have time to listen to any of their music beforehand. Their music sounds quite similar in genre to Puppet Rebellion’s, although maybe not as catchy. They play indie/rock/pop inspired music. There were some nice melodic guitar parts. I did enjoy their set, especially the last couple of songs as they had a slightly heavier sound. Their style struck me as quite mainstream.

Puppet Rebellion

Puppet Rebellion were next on stage. I’ve seen them live a couple of times. They’ve been steadily growing in confidence over the past couple of years. Last night, the band members seemed very at home on stage, engaging with the audience, and they put on an awesome performance. As well as playing some of their more well known songs, including “Cupboards Painted Red”, “Life In Your Hands”, “Please Me”, and “Pact”, they also played a couple of new tracks that sounded great. Their songs are dancey and have anthemic lyrics. Many of the audience were dancing and singing along and they’d drawn quite a crowd for the show. Puppet Rebellion have a very professional and polished stage presence as a band. Their music is both thought-provoking and uplifting. They are a must-see band.

Little Grim

After last night’s performance, I am now a Little Grim fan 🙂 This young band has a fantastically eclectic style. I am not really sure how to describe their music. It is funky, with elements of soul, pop, and other stuff. It’s quite original and each one of their songs is different. They have quite a dancey sound and last night’s gig was a lot of fun. I’d listened to their music on Spotify the night before the gig and enjoyed it. I especially liked their song “Vice”, so was happy that they started the show with that.

The whole set was excellent. I would recommend this band to anyone who likes experimental/progressive music, or just good music. It’s always great to find a band who are not afraid to try something new.

At the end of the show, the audience were shouting out for one more song, but unfortunately there was a strict curfew. I would have loved to have heard another song 🙂 A great performance.
