The Borderline has had a make-over 🙂 It’s always been one of my favourite music venues and I loved the old look but I think the changes are great. The whole place looks swish and very contemporary. The Virginmarys were one of the first bands to headline there after last week’s relaunch.
After seeing this band at Camden Rocks Festival last year, I was looking forward to catching another show. This is a band that has produced hit after hit and has slowly been building an army of dedicated fans. The Virginmarys has a loyal fan community and it’s great to turn up to gigs and see so many familiar and friendly faces in the audience. The band definitely have something special and this is reflected in the way people are drawn to follow them almost obsessively. The band’s motto, currently emblazoned on their official band T-shirts, is “Peace Love Truth Music” and this is also what they seem to attract by way of fans; I have met some of the nicest music fans via their fan community and street team. Many of the fans I met at the gig on Tuesday had bought tickets for more than one of the shows in this current UK tour, following the band up and down the country!
Before I review the gig, I must mention the support band. The Hyena Kill is a band I had never heard of. The band is Steven Dobb (vocals/guitar) and Lorna Blundell (drums). They make a lot of noise for a two-piece 🙂 I don’t know the band well enough, so can’t remember the names of the songs they played but I enjoyed the show. It’s a heavy, almost tribal, rock sound. One of the songs—which I think was a new one—a melodic/introspective track, was pretty amazing, and was definitely a highlight of their performance (don’t know what it was called!). They were a great choice for a support band. Their debut album is available on Bandcamp to stream/purchase: https://thehyenakill.bandcamp.com/
The main event of the evening was, of course, The Virginmarys. This is a band that you must try to catch live if you’re a rock fan. Their music is also awesome on record but the live experience just takes it to another dimension. The Virginmarys produce the kind of music that makes you want to dance and sing along, which is always the best kind of music 🙂
They played most of the songs from their latest album “Divides”, which is an absolutely outstanding album; there are no fillers, it’s just full of great music.
They also played quite a few of the tracks from their other awesome album “King of Conflict”. There was also “Off to Another Land” from their debut EP.
I love their newest song. “Sweet Loretta”, which I featured as Track of the Day earlier this week, so it was great to hear that live for the first time too. The band also treated us to another new song from their upcoming album, which was called “Through The Sky”; it sounded amazing! I can hardly wait to hear their new album! 🙂
These guys are passionate about what they do and it comes across in every performance. For this show, they were joined by a new bass player Ross Massey, following the departure of Matt Rose from the band last year. He definitely fits in well with the band.
There are only a couple of dates left on this tour, so you’ll have to be quick if you want to catch them! They’re in Cardiff tonight, and Leeds tomorrow.
