Interview with Mike Svensson of Grand Rezerva

fb_img_1480371175225Introduce us to the band members and tell us a bit about your musical backgrounds.

The band consists of Mike – Vocals, Andreas – Guitar – Zoak – Bass – Thomas – Drums and Mattias “Tiz” – Guitar. We have all been friends for a long time and we have all the same musical background playing in bands with 80’s rock n roll feel to them. We’ve all been touring and recording with bands since we were all kids. We’ve also known each other for a long time and that is what’s really important with the band. We’ve always known what we want, and when the time was right we all came together in Grand Rezerva.

How and when did the band get together?

The band started in 2009, with members from various bands all with prior experience of record releases and touring. We got contacted by a label from New York called Tripaway Music. They wanted to finance an EP and from there on work with us on a broader scale. In late 2009 the self-titled EP was released. From there on it’s been a collaboration with Tripaway on a total of 7 releases, before starting work with Demon Doll Records out of Los Angeles CA, for the latest album Hell And High Water released May of 2016.

Is there a story behind how the band was named “Grand Rezerva”?

Trying to come up with a good name is the hardest thing to do. As I recall it we where sitting in the studio writing songs back in 2009 and we had just eaten dinner and a couple of wine bottles were on the table and all of a sudden we started to goof around with names and someone grabbed a wine bottle and said “how about Gran Reserva” and then we thought it was cool and only changed the spelling to Grand Rezerva instead.

Ha, ha! 🙂 Cool story.

Who are your musical heroes?

We have a lot of different musical influences but to name a few it’s the likes of: Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, Saxon, Kiss, Motley Crüe, Def Leppard Ozzy but also stuff like Alice in Chains, Elvis, Danzig, The Cult, and loads of blues like Son House, John Lee Hooker, BB King.

What are your new year resolutions?

I don’t think that we’re the kind of people that make new year resolutions. We just want to continue to make music and develop ourselves and hope to meet more fans and cool people on the road.

Tell us a bit about the songs on your album “Hell and High Water”.

We were in a tight spot when we started to write for this album. Our long time friend and bandmate had just decided to leave the band to spend more time with his family. So, me (Mike), Andreas, Thomas, and Zoak did the album ourselves, while waiting for another friend of ours to join us as soon as he was free from prior commitments. During the process of the album, some of us lost family members and got divorced. All this made a huge impact on how the songs came about and it made us stronger in the end which made the album name a perfect choice.

Do you have a favourite song to play live?

Hell And High Water and Second Coming.

Do you have any gigs/tours planned?

We’re in the middle of wrapping up shows for this year, and in 2017 we have some shows booked in Sweden and we’re also talking to some venues in Germany.

What tips would you give to bands who are just starting out?

Believe in what you do and others will too. Write good songs, be well rehearsed, and play live as much as possible.

Which are your favourite social media sites, and why?

Twitter and Facebook. Those have been the places where we managed to connect the most with fans.

If you could tour with any band, who would you choose and why?

Whitesnake, Saxon, those kinds of bands. We would fit musically great with them.

What were your favourite new albums of 2016?

Personally for me, it’s The Cult- Hidden City, Metallica – Hardwired to self destruct, Black Stone Cherry – Kentucky, Sixx:A.M. – Prayers For The Damned, Ace Frehley – Origins Vol1.

Great choices! There have been so many awesome albums released this year.

What have been some of the band’s highlights so far?

When we got invited to play a couple of shows in New York City and at the same time meet some of our US fans. It was an awesome experience.

Any other news for your fans?

In 2017 look out for some new music from Grand Rezerva, maybe you can get involved and get an extra treat.

Thank you, Mike! Wishing you continued success with Grand Rezerva!
