I’ve been listening to Broken Witt Rebels for a while now, and they just keep knocking my socks off. ‘Georgia Pine’ is just more proof of how GOOD these guys are. The band blends a wealth of influences in their music, and on this EP, the quartet showcases its skills and versatility by dipping into blues, rock, and a touch of soul, creating beautiful music along the way.
I wasn’t surprised, but very pleased, to see that they recently won the award for best rock act at the Unsigned Music Awards in the UK – if you want to know why, ‘Georgia Pine’ will certainly enlighten you.
‘Georgia Pine’ kicks off with the stunning tune ‘Low’, decked out with a heavy, addictive and pretty much irresistible riff, a deep groove, and (as always) outstanding vocals. This track is my favourite on the EP: there’s just such a powerful heft and weight to it that I keep hitting replay, listening to it again and again and again.
The rest of the EP is brilliant as well. ‘Suzie’ is soulful rocker with a whole lot of heart, and the title track ‘Georgia Pine’ (recently Rock And Roll’s Track of the Day) is just frigging gorgeous, blending soul and blues with the grit and heft of rock and roll: it just rips right into you from the first note to the last.
‘Getaway Man’ is a beautiful ballad, lit up by so much passion and longing, and with some fantastic lyrics to boot – “who are you / if you don’t believe in love”; while final track ‘Guns’ is a fast and fiery rock and roller, showcasing some great guitar-work and more of Danny Core’s awesome and powerful voice.
If you like bands like The Temperance Movement and Rival Sons, you should definitely check out Broken Witt Rebels. And no matter what, you should make haste and pick up this EP. Broken Witt Rebels might be a relatively young band, but they play with fire and confidence and I can’t wait to hear what they do next.
