New music: Debut EP – Minor Arcana, by Tarot Rats

This new band have stormed onto the UK rock scene with a very original EP. All the songs on this debut EP have a very unique sound. They seem to have captured the essence of the best classic/alternative rock and brought it up to date. For a bit more information about the band and their inspiration, check out my interview here:

EP Review

The first track, “Simon”, was previously released as a single and video is available on Youtube.
It’s an up tempo song, which reminds me in parts of Pearl Jam, it also has quite a retro sound that makes me think of bands from the ‘70s.

The next track on the EP is “Killing Me At the Station”, the shortest song in the collection. It’s another upbeat song, with reflective lyrics and lots of great guitar work.

“No Love Lost” continues the theme from the previous track. This was originally released as an acoustic version, and was the first track I heard from this band. After hearing that, I was keen to hear the EP. This version is also great. I think this song a good example of how diverse this band’s sound is.

The final two tracks on the EP are my favourites at the moment. Both songs are quite long at over five minutes each. “Rats Get Fat While Brave Men Die” is an epic, with a poignant theme. It’s a song that, to me, indicates this band have the potential to become one of the greats. “Temperence” is a live recording and the final track on the EP. It’s a gorgeous, mellow and slightly melancholic song that left me wanting to hear more from this talented band. They have plans for a full album, and I am now very eager to hear that!

To sum up, this is a very talented band who are offering something different; the vocals and music, and songwriting, are exemplary. Tarot Rats’ music is creative and they breaking boundaries with their sound, mixing the old with the new and coming up with something special. Definitely a band to watch.
