Interview with Marc Burford of Echotape

[Originally posted on UK Arts Directory 12.08.15]

I recently came across a talented new UK band, Echotape. They have some great songs available to stream online and a few singles available on iTunes. They are building up a large following, getting lots of attention from music media, and have been featured on BBC Introducing. Echotape have an uplifting rock and roll sound. Their latest single is ‘All My Days’:

I recently interviewed the lead singer, Marc Burford, to find out a bit more about the band…

Interview with Marc Burford of Echotape

Introduce us to the band members and tell us something about each one that we might not know.

There’s 4 of us, Mike, Bow, Dan and me (Marc). Hmm… what can I say about everyone? Mike’s a massive fan of West Ham football club, quite often we have caught him sneaking off early from band practice to watch the game. Bow has a massive fear of flying, especially hates turbulence. Dan can solve a Rubik’s cube in under 5 minutes.

That’s impressive! I never did work out how to solve those 😕

Me, I have a licence to drive a tractor. Ha,ha!

LOL that must come in handy! 🙂

You have a few singles on iTunes, any plans to release an album?

Yeah, we are currently working on one at the moment that is due for release end of this year/beginning of next!

Great news!

We are recording it ourselves, so can be very hard at times to all be happy with the sound.

Who writes the songs for Echotape, and where does the inspiration come from?

I come up with the main bulk then play it to the boys, if everyone is happy with it we try it in the set.

Inspiration comes from everything. I try to channel all my emotions into the songs. Anything from meeting new people, seeing new things and listening to music can inspire me to write a song.

Who were some of your musical idols when you were growing up?

I was brought up on Fleetwood Mac, early Green Day, Oasis, Led Zeppelin. I remember just wanting to be Noel Gallagher form Oasis at a young age, and dreaming of playing stadiums.

How would you describe Echotape’s music to someone who’s never heard it before?

British indie Rock n Roll 🙂

You’ve been touring recently and have some more shows coming up. What have been your favourite shows so far, and which ones are you most looking forward to?

Really enjoyed playing in the Netherlands this year at festival called Vestrock. Which included a show inside a cathedral, that was very emotional to do. Looking forward to going back out there in October later this year!

Sounds great! It’s nice that you’re getting to play abroad as well as in the UK 🙂

What are the band’s plans for the rest of 2015?

We have a load of touring to do across the world, but mainly concentrating on getting the album done and ready for release.

You’re travelling to Russia this year, which I understand is the furthest the band has travelled so far. Apart from those countries are there any others that you would love to play?

Always wanted to play Japan, I’ve never been and would love to see the culture of the place. Would also like to play Canada; a lot of our music has been streamed over there so i would imagine we have a good following!

If you could tour with any other band, who would you choose, and why?

Would love to tour with the Foo Fighters. Think Dave Grohl would be a right laugh on the road, plus they would be playing massive venues! Which would mean we would be playing massive venues,ha,ha!

Well, if you creating music as you’ve been doing, I’m sure those massive venues will be within reach soon enough! 😉

Which social media sites have you found to be the best for music promotion?

I’m a massive fan of Twitter, I like the fact that it’s constantly buzzing. Also very direct to people you want to contact. Used to like Facebook but I find it limits your post reach unless you pay to promote. I don’t feel you should have to pay to tell your own fans what’s going on.

That’s true! I feel the same way about Facebook. Sometimes I wonder whether anyone can see my posts, LOL

What have been Echotape’s highlights so far?

Jamming with Carl Barat from the Libertines, we are all big fans of the band and great to play with heroes. Also really proud that we’ve had over half a million plays on Soundcloud!! But I’m sure there is more to come 🙂

That’s amazing!

Any other news for your fans?

Keep you eyes peeled for new music on the way! Got a new video ready and waiting to be released.

Excellent! I’ll be looking out for that. You have great videos! 🙂 Thanks for answering my questions, Marc! Looking forward to the new album.

Band bio:

Echotape was formed in 2011 by a group of four like-minded guys from the music scene in a small, off-the-map town in the South of England.

Living together in their own studio and flat, the boys set about getting their music heard from all corners of the globe. Their sense of adventure has seen the band perform from Hollywood to Holyhead, Moscow to Madrid. Feature in London’s Tate Gallery, have naked stage invasions in Dublin, and jam onstage with Carl Barat of The Libertines.

Their DIY approach was featured in Sky News’ report and interview with the band on the DIY ethic amongst new artists in November 2013. Their single “We Should Feel Like We Are In Love”, trended on SoundCloud after release in April 2014, with a sold out single to boot. This also saw the band invited for a studio session with BBC Introducing South, and spend the summer on the festival circuit at the likes of The Great Escape, Liverpool Sound City and Blissfields.

‘Whiskey Bar’ followed in late 2014. With anticipation and the fanbase building they performed a sold-out London show and gained 100,000 plays within the first 4 weeks of release. This track was playlisted instore at River Island with BBC 6Music, BBC Radio 2 and global radio support.

In 2015, Echotape have toured the UK and Ireland in support of their single ‘See You Soon’, smashed through the half-million mark on soundcloud plays, had further global radio and River Island support, sell out their first headline show overseas and perform to a packed out tent at Vestrock in the Netherlands to rave reviews.

Echotape are currently in the middle of a busy festival summer before jetting off to Russia to play V-ROX festival in August with another European tour and full release scheduled for the autumn.
