Gig Review: The Darkness, Roundhouse Camden London 20.12.15

[Originally posted on UK Arts Directory 21/12/15]

The Darkness are one of those bands that know how to entertain. Justin Hawkins (lead singer) is an expert in motivating a crowd! The Roundhouse was sold out last night and there was a definite party atmosphere.

They started with their excellent song “Barbarians” from the new album, “Last of Our Kind”. The Darkness played a mixture of old and new songs, including “Black Shuck”, “Mudslide”, “Love Is Only a Feeling”, “Get Your Hands Off My Woman”, and “One Way Ticket”.

One of the highlights of the evening was their performance of “I Believe In A Thing Called Love”, where Justin insisted that everyone in the arena bounced up and down, jumping if possible, throughout the song! 🙂

Their seasonal hit “Christmas Time” was another highlight. The band threw Christmas cookies into the crowd. I didn’t manage to catch any unfortunately! 😦

I also enjoyed their version of Radiohead’s “Street Spirit (Fade Out)”.

This is a talented group with each member adding something to the band. The new addition of Rufus Taylor as a drummer works brilliantly. They are a theatrical band who obviously love performing and are a joy to watch.

At one point, Justin Hawkins—along with his guitar—was carried on the shoulders of a security man out into the crowd.

Definitely one of my favourite gigs of the year. It was the kind of show where you can’t help smiling all the way through 🙂

A perfect pre-Christmas show by a fantastic band. Make sure you catch them live when they’re in your area!
